Ravens shut down Bills in a vice in 19-7 win

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Sunday 31 December 2006 at 10:10 pm

The Ravens played decent on offense, but great on defense in this victory.  Steve McNair had a decent game as he completed 23 of 35 passes for 216 yards with an INT.  Jamal Lewis was busy with 20 carries for 69 yards (3.5 ypc).  Mike Anderson only carried the ball twice but he gained 32 yards.  FB Ovie Mughelli only carried the ball 2 times for 4 yards.  He also caught 5 passes for 49 yards.  Todd Heap (5 rec, 60 yards) and Derrick Mason (5 rec, 30 yards) led the way for the receiving corps of the Ravens.

The defense played great for the Ravens as the Bills carried the football 14 times for 39 yards (2.8 ypc).  The Bills completed 20 of 35 passes for 214 net yards passing.  Chris McAllister intercepted one of JP Losman’s passes and returned it 31 yards for a TD.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Buffalo Bills

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by Bird of a Feather on Friday 29 December 2006 at 2:02 am
The Buffalo Bills have been playing good football lately as they’ve won 4 of their last 6 games.  The Ravens have been dominant for awhile now as they’ve won 8 of their last 9 games.

This looks like a very tough matchup for the Bills.  The Bills will attempt to run the ball with Willis McGahee (967 yards rushing) and Anthony Thomas against a Ravens defense that is only allowing 78.3 yards rushing and 3.3 yards per carry this season.  The Bills like to throw the ball deep, but will likely have to shorten their pass routes due to the fact that they’ve allowed 44 sacks this season and the Ravens are blitzing demons on defense that already have 57 sacks.  Lee Evans (75 rec, 1,147 yards) vs. the Ravens corners will be fun to watch all game long.

The Ravens will likely keep the ball on the ground more than usual due to the poor Bills run defense that is allowing 142.9 yards rushing an 4.8 yards per carry so far this season.  Jamal Lewis (1,063 yards rushing) should have one of his best games of the season on Sunday.  The Ravens must keep Aaron Schobel (14 sacks) away from Steve McNair.  If McNair has time to throw (the Ravens have only allowed 17 sacks this season) he should have a good game.  He likes to spread the catches around to TE Todd Heap and WRs Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason.

This should be a low scoring game that is won by the Ravens.  JP Losman will make a couple of big errors under duress from the Ravens pass rush and it will cost the Bills any chance of an upset.

Kick returner BJ Sams faces long recovery time after surgery

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by Bird of a Feather on Friday 29 December 2006 at 12:50 am

The Ravens have really missed BJ Sams on special teams.  He recently had surgery to help correct his broken leg and is expected to miss 4-5 months to recover.  He returned 29 punts this season for 307 yards (10.6 avg).  He also returned 30 kick-offs for 772 yards (25.7 avg).  The Ravens miss the good field position that Sams provided for the offense.

Ravens playoff scenarios

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Thursday 28 December 2006 at 6:40 pm

The Ravens have clinched the AFC North title.  They can clinch home field advantage with:  a win and a San Diego loss.  They can clinch a first round bye with 1) a win or a tie  2) Indianapolis loss or tie.

If the Ravens win Sunday against Buffalo it could very well signal a nice run to the Super Bowl in Miami.

The Ravens mangle the Steelers 31-7 in Pittsburgh!

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Monday 25 December 2006 at 1:34 am

The Baltimore Ravens thrashed the Steelers for the second time this season with yesterday’s game taking place in Pittsburgh.  This game eliminated the defending Champs from the playoffs.  This was never a close game.  Steve McNair looked great as he connected on 21 of 31 passes for 256 yards with 3 TDs and 2 INTs.  Jamal Lewis had a decent game running the ball as he carried it 24 times for 77 yards (3.2 ypc) and a TD.  FB Ovie Mughelli even got to carry the ball 4 times for 21 yards (5.3 ypc).  Mark Clayton led the Ravens receivers with 7 receptions for 108 yards and a TD.  Todd Heap had a solid game with 4 catches for 50 yards.  Demetrius Williams and Daniel Wilcox each caught TD passes from Steve McNair.

The Ravens beat up on Ben Roethlisberger again as they sacked him 5 times.  The Ravens stuffed the Steelers running game, holding them to 63 yards rushing on 18 carries (3.5 ypc).  The Steelers also only completed 19 of 42 passes for 188 net yards passing, and the Ravens picked-off 2 passes.

The Ravens absolutely dominated the Steelers this year as they swept them and outscored them 58-7 this season.  The Ravens improved to 12-3 on the season with this win.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by Bird of a Feather on Wednesday 20 December 2006 at 4:13 pm

The Ravens are super hot as they’ve won 2 games in a row and 7 of their last 8 games.  The Steelers have won three in a row and 5 of their last 6 games.  The Steelers have won the last three games by a combined score of 84-13!  The problem for them is that they will be facing Steve McNair instead of Bruce Gradkowski, Derek Anderson and Chris Weinke.

The Ravens will probably try to run the ball with Jamal Lewis (986 yards rushing) against a Steelers defense that has allowed 90.4 yards rushing per game and 3.5 yards per carry.  The Ravens offensive line has been great in protecting the QB as they’ve only allowed 17 sacks so far this season.  If they pick up the blitz well, which is the Steelers only strength on defense, Steve McNair will torch the Steelers very average secondary.  The Ravens like to spread the ball around in the passing game to TE Todd Heap and WRs Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason.

The reason the Steelers have started winning lately is that they’ve gone back to playing Steelers’ football, which is running the ball and playing good defense.  They will attempt to do the same thing this Sunday against the Ravens.  That will be easier said than done as the Ravens are only allowing 79.4 yards rushing and 3.3 yards per carry.  Willie Parker (1,331 yards rushing) has been outstanding running the ball at home, so something will have to give in this game.  The Steelers must be able to run the ball for Ben Roethlisberger to have any chance at success throwing the ball in this football game.  Roethlisberger was sacked 9 times in the first meeting, so the Steelers would be smart to run shorter patterns.

The Steelers have played well at home this season, but the Ravens have played well everywhere.  The Steelers just don’t match up well with the Ravens who thumped them 27-0 just 4 weeks ago.  The game will be closer this time, but the Ravens will complete the season sweep with a win in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Ravens hold off Browns 27-17 and win the AFC North

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Sunday 17 December 2006 at 11:05 pm

The Baltimore Ravens had a scare today when the Browns tied them in the third quarter, but the Ravens scored 10 unanswered points to finish off the game.  Steve McNair started the game and went 0 for 4 passing before leaving the game after Andra Davis stepped on his hand.  McNair didn’t return to the game.  In stepped Kyle Boller and he played real well.  He completed 13 of 21 passes for 238 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.  Jamal Lewis had a good game as he carried the ball 22 times for 109 yards (5.0 ypc) and a TD.  Demetrius Williams caught 2 passes for 100 yards and a TD.  Todd Heap was busy with 5 catches for 58 yards.  FB Ovie Mughelli caught 2 passes for 13 yards and a TD.

The defense played pretty well today.  Ray Lewis had 7 tackles and a sack.  Terrell Suggs was all over the place and wound up with 9 tackles and a sack.  Adalius Thomas also was very active with 9 tackles and a 1/2 sack.  Trevor Pryce also had a good game with 3 tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble.  The Browns only ran the ball 16 times for 68 yards (4.3 ypc).  The Browns completed 23 of 33 passes for 168 net yards passing.

The Ravens improved to 11-3 on the season and won the division.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Cleveland Browns

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by Bird of a Feather on Friday 15 December 2006 at 3:55 pm
The Browns have lost 3 out of their last 4 games incuding last week’s 27-7 beat-down at the hands of the Steelers.  The Ravens won 20-10 last week and have won 6 of their last 7 games.

The Browns would probably like to get a running game going against the Ravens, but the Ravens only allow 80.3 yards rushing per game and 3.3 yards per carry so far this season.  Reuben Droughns (552 yards rushing) has been a huge disappointment this season, and will more than likely have a rough game.  The Browns might just decide to air it out and throw the ball 40+ times this week.  The Ravens are a heavy blitzing team that has 46 sacks so far this season, but they also play alot of man coverage, so their could be some plays that can be made against them.  Derek Anderson has played very well is his limited time at QB and he’s only been sacked 1 time this season.   The Ravens sacked Charlie Frye 7 times in the first meeting between these two teams.

Jamal Lewis is probably foaming at the mouth after he watched game film of how Willie Parker and Najeh Davenport ran all over the Browns last week.  Lewis (877 yards rushing) should find alot of running room against a Browns defense that is allowing 185.8 yards rushing per game on the road!  Don’t think for a minute that Steve McNair won’t want to get his too.  The Ravens saw what Tony Gonzalez did to the Browns a couple of weeks ago and no doubt will be looking for Todd Heap.  Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason both were very clutch in the first meeting between these teams too.

The Ravens won the first meeting in Cleveland 15-14 on a last second FG by Matt Stover.  Remember though, the Browns played a good game against Pittsburgh in Cleveland too and laid an egg in the second match-up.   The Ravens need this game and the Browns are playing for pride.  Sure, Derek Anderson wants to get the Ravens back for letting him go….but he’s coming to a gun fight with a better knife.

Ravens linebacking corps is Awesome!

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Wednesday 13 December 2006 at 2:36 pm

The Ravens have the best linebacking corps in the NFL.  No other unit dominates the game like these guys do.  Bart Scott has been awesome as he has made 89 tackles, has 8.5 sacks and has picked off 2 passes.  Ray Lewis has turned back the clock and has been great.  Lewis has made 84 tackles, 3 sacks, a fumble recovery and 2 interceptions.  Adalius Thomas has been outstanding at outside linebacker.  Thomas has made 67 tackles, 10 sacks, a fumble recovery and a interception.  Terrell Suggs also has brought alot of pressure off the edge and has made 49 tackles, 7 sacks and has recovered 2 fumbles.

The linebackers have been set free by the play of the defensive line that has kept the linebackers clean.

Ravens beat up the Chiefs 20-10 at Arrowhead

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by Bird of a Feather on Sunday 10 December 2006 at 9:49 pm

This was an impressive win for the Ravens as the Chiefs had been 20-1 in their last 21 home December games.  Steve McNair was outstanding as he completed 21 of 27 passes for 283 yards and a TD.  Jamal Lewis carried the ball 24 times for 81 yards (3.4 ypc) and a TD.  Mark Clayton had an outstanding game as he caught 5 passes for 112 yards and a TD.  Derrick Mason pitched in with 5 catches for 68 yards.  Todd Heap was also active with 4 catches for 33 yards.

The defense was awesome for the Ravens on Sunday.  S Ed Reed had a huge game with 3 tackles and 2 interceptions.  Terrell Suggs (8 tackles, sack), Trevor Pryce (7 tackles, sack) and Bart Scott (7 tackles, sack) led the way as the Ravens harrassed Trent Green the whole game.  The Chiefs had some success running the ball with 30 carries for 135 yards (4.5 ypc).  The Ravens really played good against the pass as the Chiefs completed 15 of 27 passes for 141 net yards passing.

The Ravens moved one step closer to a division title with this win.  The Ravens now sit at 10-3 on the season.
