The Baltimore Ravens going young at WR for 2007
The Ravens have a really young corps of WRs heading into the 2007 season as Derrick Mason is the only greybeard of the group. 3rd year man Mark Clayton emerged as Steve McNair’s favorite target last season as he blends good speed, hands and toughness. Clayton played in all 16 games (12 starts) last season for the Ravens and he caught 67 passes for 939 yards (14.0 avg) with 5 TD grabs and he also carried the football 7 times for -30 yards (-4.3 ypc). Look for Clayton to improve on those numbers this season. He has now played in 30 NFL games (22 starts) in his career and he has caught 111 passes for 1,410 yards (12.7 avg) with 7 TD grabs and he also has carried the football 15 times for 3 yards (0.2 ypc) with 1 TD run.
Derrick Mason will again be the #2 WR for the Ravens. He might have lost some of his speed but he still has great hands and McNair looks for him when he needs to make a big play. Mason played in all 16 games (15 starts) last season and he caught 68 passes for 750 yards (11.0 avg) with 2 TD grabs and he also carried the ball 1 time for a loss of 4 yards.  Look for Mason to pad his career numbers this season with another solid year of possession receiving. Mason has now played in 154 games (104 starts) in his NFL career and he has caught 607 passes for 7,937 yards (13.1 avg) with 42 TD grabs. He also has carried the football 7 times for -2 yards (-0.3 ypc).
Second year man Demetrius Williams is the Ravens’ secret weapon this season. He has big-time speed and he can get deep which is an ideal trait for a #3 WR. He played in 16 games (1 start) as a rookie last season for the Ravens and he caught 22 passes for 396 yards (18.0 avg) with 2 TD grabs. I can easily see him double those numbers in his second year in the NFL.
Rookie Yamon Figurs was selected to play on special teams but he could also win a job as the #4 WR on the Ravens which is a job that is wide open. He has much more speed than any of the guys competing with him so he is a guy to keep your eyes on.
Clarence Moore will likely make the team as the designated red zone WR. He wins a lot of jump balls because of his 6′6″, 220 pound body but that’s the only real skill he brings to the table for the Ravens. He played in 10 games (1 start) last season for the Ravens and he caught 2 passes for 1 yard (0.5 avg) with a TD. He has now played in 29 games (8 starts) and he has caught 29 passes for 353 yards (12.2 avg) with 5 TD grabs.
4th year man Devard Darling must have pictures of someone in a compromising position because he brings absolutely nothing to the table for the Ravens. He played in 1 game last season for the Ravens and did nothing in it. In his first three seasons in the NFL he has played in 14 games (0 starts) and he has caught 2 passes for 5 yards (2.5 avg) and he has made 4 tackles. I will be stunned if he makes the Ravens this season.
