The Baltimore Ravens will likely need a new starting QB in 2008

Steve McNair started the season as the QB of the Ravens but he appears washed up.  He completed 133 of 205 passes (64.9%) for 1,113 yards passing with 2 TD passes and 4 interceptions (73.9 QB Rating).  The Ravens ran to many short passes when McNair was under center which led to too many defenders being near the line which also hurt their running game.  Kyle Boller has a stronger arm than McNair does but he often throws it into tight spots which results in turnovers.  Boller has completed 124 of 208 passes (59.6%) for 1,242 yards with 5 TD passes and 5 interceptions (74.6 QB Rating) so far this season.  Look for the Ravens to have a shiny new starting QB for the 2008 season.

Once again, the Ravens offense didn’t show up and it killed them in this game.  Kyle Boller completed 21 of 33 passes for 191 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 interceptions.  Willis McGahee didn’t have a good game as he carried the ball 17 times for 59 yards (3.5 ypc) with 1 TD run.  Musa Smith didn’t run well as he carried the ball 3 times for a loss of 3 yards (-1.0 ypc) but he added 4 catches for 28 yards (7.0 avg).  Derrick Mason had a solid day as he caught 7 passes for 99 yards.  Rookie fullback caught a 13-yard TD pass.  The Ravens finished up with 56 yards rushing on 20 carries (2.8 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 33 passes for 154 yards.

Ray Lewis led the way on defense with 8 tackles.  The Chargers finished up with 83 yards rushing on 30 carries (2.8 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 35 passes for 249 yards.

The Ravens thought they had this game won when Phil Dawson appeared to miss a 51-yard field goal to tie the game….but the refs huddled said the kick was good.  The Browns won the coin toss and went right down the field to win the game on a 33-yards Dawson field goal.  Kyle Boller got the start in this game for the Ravens and he completed 22 of 41 passes for 279 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 interceptions (one of which was returned 100 yards for a TD by Brodney Pool of the Browns).  He also carried the ball 2 times for 19 yards (9.5 ypc).  Willis McGahee had another solid game against the Browns as he carried the ball 21 times for 102 yards (4.9 ypc) with a TD run.  He also caught 2 passes for 24 yards (12.0 avg).  Davard Darling had the best game of his NFL career as he caught 4 passes for 107 yards (26.8 avg) with a TD grab.  Derrick Mason (6 rec, 83 yards) and TE Quinn Sypniewski (6 rec, 53 yards) both pitched in on the passing game for the Ravens.  The Ravens finished up with 128 yards rushing on 25 carries (5.1 ypc) and they also completed 22 of 41 passes for 240 yards.

The Ravens defense didn’t play that poorly despite the Browns putting up 33 points.  Ray Lewis was a monster in this game as he led the Ravens with 16 tackles, a fumble recovery and a interception that he returned 35-yards for a TD!  Terrell Suggs also had a nice game with 9 tackles and a interception.  The Browns finished up with 117 yards rushing on 34 carries (3.4 ypc) and they also completed 24 of 38 passes for 263 yards.

Cincinnati Bengals 21, Baltimore Ravens 7

The Ravens were awful on offense in this game and that’s the reason for the beating they took against the Bengals.  Steve McNair started the game but he was awful and was yanked late in the game.  He completed 17 of 26 passes for 128 yards with 1 interception and he lost 2 fumbles.  He was replaced by Kyle Boller who completed 6 of 8 passes for 89 yards and a interception.  Willis McGahee carried the football 17 times for 60 yards (3.5 ypc) with a TD and he also caught 2 passes for 10 yards.  Mark Clayton led all Ravens receivers with 8 catches for 107 yards (13.4 avg).

The defense was placed in bad situations this whole game due to the offense turning the football over.  Ray Lewis led the defense with 10 tackles and a sack as the Ravens kept the Bengals out of the end zone in this game.  The Bengals finished up with 70 yards rushing on 34 carries (2.1 ypc) and they also completed 23 of 34 passes for 256 yards.

Pittsburgh Steelers 38, Baltimore Ravens 7

The Ravens never had a chance in this game as the offense kept setting up the Steelers with short fields.  The Steelers scored the first 35 points in this game and then they coasted in the second half to an easy victory.  Steve McNair was pathetic as he completed 13 of 22 passes for 63 yards with 0 TDs and a interception.  He also lost a fumble.  McNair was replaced late in the game by Kyle Boller who played even worse.  Boller completed 3 of 9 passes for 21 yards.  Willis McGahee carried the ball 12 times for 50 yards (4.2 ypc) with a TD run and he also caught 3 passes for 12 yards.  Derrick Mason was the leading receiver for the Ravens with 6 catches for 35 yards.  The Ravens finished up with 64 yards rushing on 14 carries (4.6 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 31 passes for 40 yards.

Terrell Suggs led the Ravens defense with 11 tackles and a sack.  The Ravens defense was outstanding against the vaunted run offense of the Steelers as they only rushed for 90 yards on 39 carries (2.3 ypc).  The Steelers also completed 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards.
