29-year old OLB/DE Terrell Suggs will miss the entire 2012 season due to a torn Achilles tendon. This is a big blow to the Ravens’ D as Suggs was by far the best pass rusher on the team. Suggs played in all 16 games for the Ravens last year and he had 70 tackles, 14 sacks, 10 tackles for a loss, 7 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions and 6 passes defensed. Suggs has now played in 141 games in his first 9 years with the Ravens and he has 141 tackles, 82.5 sacks, 66 tackles for a loss, 27 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries, 44 passes defensed and 7 interceptions (2 returned for TDs). The Ravens are really going to miss Suggs as he always seemed to play best when the games got bigger.

The Baltimore Ravens selected RB Bernard Pierce with the 84th overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Pierce is 6’0″, 215 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40. Pierce will be Ray Rice’s top backup in 2012 and beyond. Pierce hits holes hard but he’s not a big time power back. He has a nice array of moves and he is patient enough to wait for holes to develop. He is not much of a receiver, so that’s something he’s going to have to work on. Pierce played in 12 games (10 starts) for Temple last year and he carried the ball 273 times for 1,481 yards (5.4 ypc) with 27 TD runs. He also caught 3 passes for 52 yards (17.3 avg) last year. Pierce has played in 34 games (24 starts) in his three years at Temple and he carried the ball 663 times for 3,570 yards (5.4 ypc) with 53 TD runs. He also has caught 19 passes for 198 yards (9.4 avg) with 1 TD grab in his college career. This was another solid pickup for the Ravens and GM Ozzie Newsome.

Opposing teams are coming after Ravens’ players in free agency, so they are focusing on trying to keep their own players rather than going on a spending spree. Here’s a look at what has been done so far this off-season:

Offensively: The Ravens have slapped RB Ray Rice with the franchise tag. They are going to try to sign him to a long term deal and this buys them a year to get that done. The Ravens have also re-signed starting center Matt Birk and that was also a smart move. That is the extent of the Ravens’ moves on offense so far this post-season.

Defensively: The Ravens have re-signed CB Lardarius Webb, LB Jameel McClain, OLB/DE Albert McClellan and LB Brendon Ayanbadejo. Those were good moves, especially keeping Webb and McClain. The Ravens have also signed CB Corey Graham and safety Sean Considine to help them with depth in the secondary as well as on special teams.

GRADE FOR THE OFF-SEASON SO FAR: C-
